My Profile
Name: Mei Ogura (小倉芽衣)
Where I’m from:
I moved to various places when I was a kid. I went to elementary schools in Aichi Prefecture, Shizuoka Prefecture, and Shenzhen and Shanghai in China. Since 2013, I have been based in the Tokyo area.
Hobbies:
I am a Ghibli person! I love to watch films created by Studio Ghibli and consider the hidden messages in their stories. It is so hard to choose the best Studio Ghibli film, but My Neighbor Totoro has been my favorite since I was a kid, partly because I like the energetic protagonist named Mei. My current and somewhat unique way of enjoying Ghibli movies is to watch dubbed versions in various languages; the translations in different languages give me a fresh impression of the films.
I also enjoy handcrafts! I started pottery during the pandemic and became a huge fan of it. I always have fun creating art while chatting with senior members of my community. You can easily tell my art because it is often in the shape of Ghibli characters.
I enjoy traveling as well. Visiting all the continents is on my bucket list (hopefully, I can complete this soon and stay alive for decades after that).
Occupation:
I am a senior at a university in Tokyo, graduating in March 2025 with a degree in International Relations, with an emphasis on international sociology and area studies in Asia. My current academic interests are anti-racism in Japan and transnational history. After completing my undergraduate education, I will be opening a new chapter as an IT engineer for a company in Tokyo.
Currently, in addition to working as a tour guide, I volunteer as a teacher for children in need.
Tour with me:
I am more than happy when YOU enjoy the multifaceted character of Shinjuku! Shinjuku itself is a magnet in Japan, attracting many tourists. But Shinjuku becomes even more attractive when you visit with the detailed insights provided by a local guide. I’m excited to share the unique history of Shinjuku to make your visit even more enjoyable. It is my greatest pleasure to make your tour wonderful! By the end of the tour, you will have many pictures of yourself in photogenic locations. I will do my best to take as many nice pictures as possible during the tour. I am looking forward to seeing you on the tour!
